Reindeer Run 2019!!!

12/14/2019

Strait Air Volksgruppe members drove on their annual "Reindeer Run" on Saturday, December 14th. We all met at the Walmart in Port Angeles. The bugs were disguised as reindeer and the bus was Santa's sleigh.  We then cruised through town to Ediz Hook. We took pictures and visited.

Then we cruised back through town to St. Andrew's Place where we "sang" Christmas carols. We must have been not too bad because the residents stayed through them all. We gave the residents and the staff Christmas treat boxes and reindeer candy canes. We then cruised to the most beautiful dump in the country! We enjoyed the view then cruised to Bruce and Theresa's home for lunch.

Theresa fixed a scrumptious array of three soups (Curried Butternut Squash; Mushroom; and Turkey). They were so good! We also enjoyed a veggie tray and rolls made by Jan with an assortment of jams and honey. Annie provided a beautiful white chocolate and raspberry mousse cheesecake. Everyone received a VW cookie box. Theresa made us holiday themed reusable shopping bags. And Jan made cotton washcloths and "scrubbies" for everyone. It was a wonderful day with perfect sunny weather and perfect friends.

The Joyce Daze Parade was held on Saturday, August 3rd. We received a second place (red) ribbon for clubs. We arrived at the staging area at about 9:30. They judge at 10:00, so we wanted to be included in the judging. While waiting for the parade to start at 1:00, we enjoyed some refreshments and lots of talking. We also decorated our cars with flags.

Mini Golf and Cruise!

This was our club's first annual mini golf and cruise event. It was a blast! The weather wasn't too bad either. We took a very "mini" cruise out to Freshwater Bay, then traveled a short distance to the mini golf course. The course is owned by some friends of Theresa's and they just do it as a very fun hobby. It's an amazing little place and a fun course and I think we were very lucky to be able to play there. The course owners were VERY hospitable and nice and even cooked our hot dogs for us! Despite the fact that Dave and Francie have never played mini golf, Francie came in second to Bruce and Dave got an amazing hole in one! Rodney got a hole in one and so did one of Tim and Destiny's girls. Every time someone gets a hole in one, you have to go hit a triangle bell that was shaped like an eagle! It was such a fun day.

Each hole had a theme. The main theme changes every year. This year is "Mini Golf Around the World" and each hole represented a different country.

I was informed that none of our cars won "Best VW" this time around. I want to know why the hell not!

It was top-down weather that day. Lucy was a happy car.

Dinner and a Drive-In Movie Cruise!

Everything was perfect for our club's first annual Dinner and a Movie Cruise to Port Townsend. Beautiful weather, great food and an action packed movie at the Drive-In.

We cruised to Port Townsend and stopped at the Ajax Cafe in Port Hadlock for a fantastic dinner. Then we headed to the drive-in to see John Wick 3: Parabellum. Being at the drive-in was like stepping back in time, except the picture and sound were WAY better due to a digital upgrade. You could listen through your radio, but they had the old fashioned speakers too, which most of us needed anyway. As the sun went down, it got a tad chilly, but we were smart and brought our bankies.

Rodney is chowing down on his chowder. He loved it! The Ajax has some of the best food on the Peninsula.

At the Ajax, it's more than OK to lick your plate.

At the drive-in! Not every spot had a speaker, so that's why we're parked that way.

Before the main feature, we watched a preview for an upcoming movie called, "Francie and Dave's Winter Adventure".
Picture
Ah, memories! And no, none of us drove off with the speaker still attached.

Time for bankies and Raisinets!

Rhody Grand Parade in Port Townsend!

Four VWs with five club members attended the Rhody Parade in Port Townsend on Saturday, May 18th. We staged just off Lawrence Street from 10:00 to about 1:30. The Ferndale High School band lined up next to us for a short time while they waited to join the parade. They were very impressive! The parade started at 1:00, and we joined in at about 1:40. Lots of spectators along the route. After the parade, we drove to the Bayview Restaurant for lunch. The weather was lovely - a little overcast, a little sun, and not too cold. We're looking forward to next year.

The Rhody Festival theme this year was "The Greatest Rhody" and everything was decorated circus Big Top style. I was fretting that other than VW's being known as "clown cars", we weren't decorated in anything special. But along came a lady giving out free clown noses and we were saved! What's better than a bunch of clowns driving clown cars?

We saw a lot of cute kids enjoying the parade. Unfortunately we weren't allowed to throw them candy or car parts.
Picture
There were a group of ladies "judging" the parade and they held up placards to show each entry how they rated. I was so happy to get a "10",  but then I realized the only card they had was a 10. Everybody got a 10. Or maybe an 01.

Crescent Lodge Cruise!

We met at the Laird's Corner Park 'n Ride lot. From there we cruised to Lake Crescent Lodge on beautiful Lake Crescent. Twelve of us cruised in seven VWs. The food was very good. The service was a little slow, but it gave us time to gab. VW people always have something to talk about! After breakfast, we cruised along Hwy 101 to Hwy 113. Headed north on Hwy 113 to Hwy 112. Made a stop at Pillar Point then headed home. It was a very nice and relaxing day. Thank you, Theresa, for suggesting this cruise! Looking forward to next year!
