Our Robby’s Run cruise took us to Hurricane Ridge. A very eventful day! We met at the Ranger’s Station at the entrance to Olympic National Park in Port Angeles. There we cruised to Hurricane Ridge. We followed the road past the visitor’s center at the ridge and found a wonderful picnic area a mile or two down the road.
Wonderful spot with lots of tables set on the edge of the ridge overlooking the mountains and valley. There was a good wind, but the temperature was warm. We had many visitors including a cute little bunny, lots of camp robbers (grey jays), and several deer. I grilled bratwurst and put them in a sauce of onions and beer to keep warm. When we were done, I tossed the sauce into a bush because the foil dish was leaking. A deer came by and smelled the beer. He spent at least a half-hour with his head in the bush licking up the beer sauce. Several hikers walked by and took pictures and wondered what he was doing! He was a happy deer. The wind caught potato chips and flung them around. I even had a plastic knife tossed at my forehead. That was a joke for some time – being hit in the head with a knife! But, altogether, the food was terrific and the company was even better!
On the way down the ridge road, we had a dust storm hit us. A gust of wind hit the side of the hill just in front of us and surrounded us with a ton of dust. It was a virtual “white-out” of dust. (I pictured my car being sand-blasted”.) We couldn’t see anything for a few minutes. Dave was in front in his ’57 bus and had to slow way down. He didn’t want to stop because he was afraid we would ram into him. We all slowed down and waited it out. I’ve never seen anything like it before! Thank goodness it only lasted a few minutes. We then stopped at an overlook and played with the camp robbers (grey jays). (My paint job was OK!)
