Five VW's with seven members cruised to Hurricane Ridge on Sunday, August 25th. It was a "fee-free" day - no entrance fees were charged. The weather was gorgeous! There were lots of visitors. We drove through the parking lot at the visitor's center and continued to the picnic area about a mile down the road. We found the same table we used last year with a tremendous view. The food was delicious and the company was even better. Not as many deer came by as last year!
After leaving the picnic area, we drove through the visitor's center again. The parking lot was full and as soon as the people saw our VW's, they took out their cameras and took pictures of us! It was just like being in a parade! Then again, I guess we were! It was amazing to see people's reactions to us. Dave said he saw a group of Asian tourists. One of them was trying to get everyone else to line up and smile. One of the group saw our VW's and her mouth dropped. Everyone in the group grabbed their cameras and started shooting our cars. Dave felt bad that he had disrupted the woman's attempt to get their picture! But, I must say, it was fun! We stopped at a couple viewpoints on the way down. The day was wonderful and everyone had a good time! Can't wait until next year! This is a good cruise. Our club took a short cruise through Port Angeles following our monthly meeting today (Sunday, August 4, 2013). We checked out the "new" Railroad Avenue and Oak Street projects. The esplanade project to improve the waterfront should be done by the end of the summer. But they just opened the two streets to traffic. As we turned off of Lincoln Street onto Railroad Avenue a group of 4-5 teenaged boys whipped out their cell phones and began recording our "train" of 4 VW buses and 3 VW bugs cruising around the corner! This was fun for our new members to see!
We then cruised to Ediz Hook where we enjoyed each other's company and the view. Another member in his bus joined us on the Hook. Beautiful day! Our club participated in the Joyce Daze Parade on Saturday, August 3, 2013. Four busses and three bugs came. This included a total of 12 members and friends. Eight were first-timers to the parade. This number included four people who joined our club at the North Olympic Volksfair VII show last Saturday. We received a Third Place Ribbon for club participation. We met at Laird's Corner Park and Ride. Then cruised to Joyce along Hwy 112. It was a little cloudy, but no rain! A fun day!
The seventh annual North Olympic Volksfair VII VW car show was held on July 27, 2013 at the 7 Cedars Casino in Blyn, Washington. We had 35 cars on display and three vendor displays. It was a beautiful day with lots of sun. Everyone had a relaxing time. Dan Hendrickson won the "Best of Show" trophy for his '63 Rag Top. There were also ten "best of Show" winners and a "Longest Distance Traveled" winner. Lots of raffle items were given away. 2013 Volksfair Award Winners Our club participated in the July 4, 2013 parade at Diamond Point (west of Blyn). One of our club members, Paul, lives there and we met at his home to decorate our cars with flags and tinsel. Six Bugs and one Rabbit pick-up participated. We then cruised down the hill to the parade staging area near the lagoon. When the parade started, five planes flew in formation over the parade route. A fire engine and an aid car from Fire Station #3 lead the parade. In addition to our club, there was a decorated sailboat being towed, some small floats and various cars. One of our members, Susi, dressed as a clown and gave away chocolate Kisses. Neighbors lined the parade route and some gave out sno-cones, home baked cookies, and salt-water taffy. I've never seen so many dogs - both dressed-up in the parade and with the spectators! One big dog was wearing a dress. She knew she looked good because she was walking so proudly! After the parade, we cruised back to Paul's house and enjoyed a picnic of pizza, pasta and potato salads, smoked oysters, beer and Mimosas. It was a wonderful day with great friends. Thank you, Paul, for hosting a terrific party!
Our club cruised to Hoodsport, on beautiful Hood Canal, Saturday, June 15, 2013. We arrived at Eagle Creek Saloon, about 4 miles north of Hoodsport, in time for a wonderful lunch. We enjoyed burgers, fish & chips, deep-fried mushrooms, clams, and hot wings. Yum! Then we drove to the Hoodsport Winery in Hoodsport, of course! We bought some wine and raspberry chocolate cordials, visited some gift shops then headed home. The weather was gorgeous with a little wind. There's nothing bugs love more than wind! :( But, we had a wonderful trip. Can't wait to do it again next year!
Our club held a Salmon Bake fundraiser on Sunday, April 14th. The proceeds benefited our car show in July. We started the day with a cruise from Ediz Hook, through Port Angeles, to Lake Dawn and ended at the Lower Elwha Tribal Center where we enjoyed cedar-planked salmon, red potatoes, coleslaw, cornbread and cookies. We want to especially thank Rita for cooking the salmon, Sonny for helping with the rest of the menu, and Stephanie for all her help in the kitchen. The food was outstanding! Our members and their friends and family had a good time! We plan to do this again!
