The Strait Air Volksgruppe started our Reindeer Run at Walmart in Port Angeles. We cruised to Ediz Hook where we took pictures. We then cruised to St. Andrews Place, an assisted living home. There, we sang carols and entertained the residences. We gave the residences and the staff treat boxes and decorated candy canes. We then cruised to the dump where we enjoyed the view. We have the most beautiful view of the Strait of Juan De Fuca! We then cruised to one of our member's home for a wonderful lunch.
The Granny's Loop Cruise was held on Sunday, October 15th. Seven VWs participated. We started the cruise with breakfast at the Cornerhouse Restaurant in Port Angeles. Good food! We then cruised west along Hwy 101, turning off onto Hwy 112. We drove past Salt Creek Rec Area and then along the beach. It was so sunny and gorgeous! We turned off of Hwy 112 at Joyce and drove to Hwy 101 where we stopped for ice cream cones at Granny's Cafe. (I discovered I could order sprinkles on my cone. They were beautiful!! Who would ever have thought!) We then drove home by way of Black Diamond Road.
We lucked out once again and had gorgeous weather for the Salt Creek picnic! You could feel that little nip in the air when sitting in the shade though, so you know Fall is here! We had a great turnout and WAY too much food (which isn't a bad thing at all)! The main course was prime rib french dip sandwiches provided by Francie and Dave, and the rest of us provided salads, appetizers, sides and desserts. Good thing we weren't planning on hiking anywhere because after all that noshing we were ready for a nap! We always seem to attract a few VW fans at our events. This time a guy from Whidbey Island in a VW van spotted us in the parking lot and stopped to talk to us, and as we were cruising out, a really nice photographer, Jon Washburn, took some really cool photos of some of us in our cars. He posted them for us to see on our Facebook page and I've put them up here as well. Thank you Jon Washburn! Yep. We know how to dress up a parking lot. These Beetles look hungry. I'd just like to say that Francie is fan-freaking-tastic cook and I really appreciate all that she and Dave do for our club. Such fun gabbing in the sunshine! Jon Washburn's photo of us cruising through the park. Jon Washburn's photo of Jan and Vern and Daisy! Jon Washburn's photo of Matt and his triple black. Dan's beeyootiful ragtop! Theresa's beautiful blue Beetle (with new dash embellishments by Bruce!) So jealous. Francie's auto-stick, Froggy. Bruce kind of has a "Thing" for VW's. Dale's Kubelwagen is the bomb! More flowers. More powers. Lucy's inaugural cruise!
Joyce Daze was bittersweet this year. We had just lost our Vinnie 3 days prior and we were somewhat in disbelief. We managed to facilitate an impromptu memorial for him with help from his sisters and nephew. Vinnie's nephew drove Vinnie's Beetle as lead car for our club in the parade and Vinnie's sister made a sign. Francie and Annie made black bows for the front of each car. Vinnie's family appreciated it very much. It was a warm day with lots of low clouds that never really burned off, but as long as it's not raining, it's all good. Hanging out before the parade was fun and Francie provided snacks and beverages for us. We had a great turnout and we won Best of Show! Pre parade staging. Our memorial to Vinnie. I think Vinnie would have liked that we won! Black bows for Vinnie. Here's Paul! He has a Mickey Mouse glove that he puts on to wave in parades. The kids love it! Dave and awards......they just kind of go together....... Our club award for Best in Show!! Some views of the parade from Annie's car. Motoring home after the parade. This sign cracks me up and I've always wanted to get a picture of it but it's so easy to drive right past it. I was ready this time! Francie's car is a nice touch too. I don't think this sign is very effective because it's been up for a long time. Unless he keeps going through wives and keeps putting the sign back up........however, he does have a boat, so really, who needs a wife?
Our cruise to Hi-Lo's in Bremerton for the VW social was so much fun! This is the first year we have done this and it's definitely on our calendar permanently now. It was a beautiful day and the sheer turnout of beautiful VW's was awesome! Hi-Lo's is a VW themed cafe and they hosted this event. They provided free hot dogs for everyone and sold t-shirts. The cafe is right next to Hale's Ales Brewery and you could sit and drink a pint while watching all the activity on the street below and listen to the great reggae band that was playing. Really great day. Waiting at Disco Bay for the crew coming from PA. Welcome to Hi-Lo's! This bus is parked right outside the cafe. The coffee bar inside the cafe. Strait Air representin' at Hi-Lo's! Great reggae band, Positive Rising! So many VW's that street parking was necessary! This Westy really yins my yang, man. Beautiful blue baja! The "Spidey" Bus! Dad's Bug is all that. This was my favorite Bug that day. Such a beautiful paint job! We VW owners love to show off our rears...... If Herbie was reincarnated into a rat rod! Pink! Yay! Pretty with pop-outs! Rad Row..... Drool! Will ya look at that Vert? I'm pretty sure we know this guy! (wink wink) The Sno-Cone Bus and great BBQ! The view from the brewery!
Under cloudy but warm skies and no rain, the Port Townsend Raker's Show was well attended! Lots of different makes and models of cars, raffle drawings, and a Ladies Poker Run. Walking around downtown Port Townsend is always interesting too! All parked in our little club area...... Tim didn't park with us though......he didn't want to associate with the riff-raff.........:) In a stunning upset, Annie's car won Best Bug/VW. She has no idea how that happened. Dave is asking for a recount.....:P
We had another gorgeous cruise. We started at Walmart where five of us gathered. Then we cruised through downtown Port Angeles along Hwy 101 to Laird's Corner Park 'n Ride where we met up with three more VW's. Then we all cruised to Granny's Cafe where we enjoyed good food and wonderful conversation. From there we drove along Hwy 101 and made a right onto Hwy 113, then right onto Hwy 112. We made a stop at Pillar Point. There we met a very nice couple from Vancouver, Canada. They had seen us cruise past the Cornerhouse Restaurant in Port Angeles and were so excited to see us come around the corner into the Pillar Point parking lot. We had a wonderful visit with them and then we cruised home. The weather was fantastic! Sunny start at WallyWorld! Meet up at the park 'n ride....... Time for a delicious breakfast at Granny's Cafe! Les and Dave Cruising! Scenic cruising! Parked at Pillar Point!
This year's Irrigation Festival parade and show 'n shine was somewhat cloudy, but it really didn't rain much and the sun peeked out every so often. It was a great day, and Dave's Bus won an award! Also, we were all just thrilled with all the free pens we got. All queued up for the parade..... Dave's bus driving in the parade in front of Annie All parked at the show 'n shine!
Saturday April 15th turned out to be a beautiful day for our annual Bug in My Pie Cruise! We started with 4 cars and picked up a few on the way. Annie and Jeff, being from Port Townsend, met up with everyone at the Chimacum Cafe. Ground zero at Wal-Mart in Port Angeles Happy cars in the Happy Valley! So.......is the pie any good here? Group conference before infiltration of the cafe. Damn we look good. We always look good. What's better than beautiful Bugs showing off on a sunny Saturday. NOTHING. David with Daisy, our unofficial mascot! A cute car club needs a cute mascot. Takeover of Chimacum Cafe. Our mascot almost made a run for it. The pie is great and the company even better!! Your faithful president on duty!
