Reindeer Run 2018!

12/15/2018

The cruise was run the day after a huge wind storm. The day was beautiful, but you could see debris and after affects of the destructive storm. Power was still out and some roads were closed. Theresa was unable to make her planed turkey dinner because of the power failure, so the group decided to have lunch at Joshua's.

We started from Walmart in Port Angeles and drove through town to Ediz Hook. Got some neat pictures. Then we drove to St. Andrews Place to sing carols. But their power was still out and most residents were still in their rooms. So we gave them the treat boxes we made (with reindeer candy canes from Karen) and continued on our cruise.

We drove to the dump, where there is a beautiful view of the straits. But the road was closed just before the entrance due to the storm. So, we turned around and headed to Joshua's Restaurant. Theresa announced she was going to cook the turkey and serve the dinner the next day (Sunday). Five of us joined Theresa and Bruce for a scrumptious turkey dinner with all the fixin's, including a butter cake from Annie. We had an absolutely wonderful weekend!

Wow! It was such a BEAUTIFUL day for a cruise, and we had lots of you come out! There was such a variety of colors of VW's we looked like a bowlful of jelly beans driving around on a gorgeous Fall day. We met for breakfast at the Cornerhouse Restaurant in Port Angeles for a hearty breakfast, cruised to the Elwha River Bridge, Salt Creek, Lake Crescent, past the Joyce General Store, then to Granny's for ice cream cones and ended with a group pic at Black Diamond.

Salt Creek Cruise and Picnic!

9/8/2018

The club cruised to Salt Creek Recreational Area on September 8th. About 30 people, in 12 VWs, attended. We all met at the Park 'n Ride lot at Laird's Corner. (Francie drove to Salt Creek early to save a spot. We couldn't get the spot we usually have, but the spot we got was even better.)  Soon the rest of the group joined her and she took pictures as they rolled in. We had prime rib sandwiches, salads, and lots of desserts. The weather was pretty good - overcast and a little foggy at times - but no rain until we were ready to pack up and leave.  As I started to pack up the tablecloths, it started to sprinkle.  Then others helped put stuff away and it started to sprinkle a little harder.  Finally, it started to lightly rain and, as I folded my chair away, I looked up and everyone was in their cars!  I was the only one still out.  I thought, "Boy, that was fast!"  I guess VW owners don't much care for getting wet!  It poured on the way home.

Our club participated in the Joyce Daze Parade on yet another gorgeous summer day. We won a red ribbon in pre-parade judging......one more for our club prize shelf!

Francie is pretty sure she knows what direction we will be going, but she consults with a parade official just in case.

I hate to report that many children were injured as we drove by. Shouts of "Slugbug! No takebacks!" and many punches to arms. Sorry, not sorry!

The Raker's Car Show in Port Townsend was on June 16th, and the Strait Air Volksgrüppe participated with 3 cars in the show. There were some other VW's there as well, from Whidbey Island, Shelton and Sequim. The winner of the Best VW award was a beautiful Beetle from Shelton. A good time was had by all and it was a gorgeous day for a show!

This year's Raker's Show was the most well attended since we started doing it. Perhaps if more members come next year we can win the club trophy!

Granny's Loop Cruise

Our Granny's Loop Spring Cruise on Mother's Day, May 13th, took us to Granny's Cafe for lunch. We had 16 members and family members join us with twelve VWs. The weather was sunny and warm. We started the cruise at Walmart in Port Angeles.  Our first stop was Granny's Cafe which was was very hospitable and lunch was wonderful, as usual. After lunch, we cruised along Hwy 101 passed Lake Crescent. There were two one-lane sections which were controlled by lights. The wait was not long at all at each stop. The road had some rough spots, which took a toll on Francie's headlight rim! It was barely hanging on when we got to Pillar Point.

From Hwy 101, we turned onto Hwy 13 and headed north to Hwy 112. We stopped at Pillar Point where we gathered river rock to use for our trophies for our car show. I hope that's not illegal. If it is illegal, then we did not gather river rock.

Then we headed home. It was so nice to see everyone. Especially Bill's lime-green '75 Super which got back on the road after a year-and-a-half of tender-loving care! So nice!

"Get the Bugs Out" Annual Tune Up Class

3/17/2018

The tune up gathering was attended by Dave, Annie, Rodney and Tracy, with Dave as our tune-up guru. It was a great class to learn about or refresh your memory on the ins and outs of tune ups. I know I learned a lot and Tracy discovered that some distributors can attack. Her day ended with 5 stitches in a nasty split lip. :( Other than that, it was a great time to get together and get some things done. Rodney changed his oil, and Dave helped Annie install her fire suppression system. Francie, as usual fixed us an awesome lunch, and great conversation was had by all!
Picture
Working on your car is so much nicer in a comfy heated garage!

Sunday, March 11th blessed us with FANTASTIC weather for a cruise to Issaquah to attend the XXX Root Beer Drive In VW Spring Fling! Dave and Francie brought out their newest member of their family, Lucy the 67 Convertible for her first club cruise. Annie, Karen and Rodney also joined the caravan. The event was well attended and we chowed down on good old burgers, fish and chips, and shakes. The drive home was equally beautiful!
